NFRC Roofing Awards Finalist

Garland UK has been shortlisted for 2 projects in the much anticipated NFRC Roofing Awards 2021.

Judged by a team of esteemed independent industry experts, the awards took place virtually and comprised a diverse mix of multi-discipline projects, from bituminous membrane, cold applied liquid and metal projects, through to heritage, green roof and cladding showcases.

With 2 Garland UK projects making it to the final shortlist, read on to learn more about the defining features of these prestigious UK and overseas projects.

The Midland Hotel – Reinforced Bitumen Membrane category

Contractor: Ronald G Graham Roofing
Garland Technical Manager: Daniel Crowley

The first Garland project shortlisted in the Reinforced Bitumen Membrane category is the iconic Midland Hotel in the heart of Manchester. This grade two listed 4-star hotel has served visitors to the city for almost 120 years and is part of the Jurys Inn group. Given its age, the building is in great condition however multiple areas of the complex roof systems were starting to show signs of significant water ingress with many large areas of staining on ceilings appearing across the top level of the hotel.

Due to the complexity of the project and the city centre location, Garland was on hand throughout the project to assist the Garland Approved Contractor with any issues which developed. Ronald G Graham Roofing has been a trusted partner of Garland UK for many years and this project really demonstrated the exceptional workmanship and technical roofing knowledge of their team.

Replacing multiple roofing system types at varying heights including complex turrets made this project exceptionally challenging.

El Alamein War Memorial – Reinforced Bitumen Membrane category

Contractor: The Complete Roofing Company
Garland Technical Manager: Paul Boole

The second Garland project, also shortlisted in the Reinforced Bitumen Membrane category, was a real first in the history of Garland UK. The El Alamein War Memorial in Egypt is a site of immense historical value, with the project brief designed to ensure that the WWII landmark was carefully restored to protect the heavily trafficked public areas and mitigate any potential water ingress for the future.

Working with The Complete Roofing Company, Garland UK was selected as an integral manufacturer on the project, creating a sympathetic design that would compliment the listed building, matching the colour and design or the existing structure. Garland specified a bespoke waterproofing system for the war memorial as part of a fantastic team effort to protect the historical landmark for years to come.
