Starting life as a drapery store back in 1852, Stringers Department Store has been run by three generations of the Clarke family since 1952.

A familiar presence in the local high street of Lytham, the department store had begun to suffer from a series of leaks, following years of neglect and minimal roof maintenance. The water ingress had started to cause havoc to the stores interior, affecting the points of sale for staff and customers, making the areas less inviting to shop in.

Garland UK was appointed to investigate the water ingress issues being experienced and secure the optimum waterproofing system for a complete roofing refurbishment.

Drawing upon 30 years of roofing industry experience, Garland Technical Manager, John Mather, was able to efficiently evaluate the roof condition for the building owners, noting an unusual mix of a single-ply membrane, liquid coatings and numerous patch repairs across the site, resulting in several failures around key roof details such as the access hatches and ventilation extrusions.

With a full roof replacement being required to prevent further damage to the building structure, the owners saw an opportunity to add further value to their roof space and install a new penthouse level to a portion of the roof, creating a state of the art office space for the Stringers Department buying team.

With a major undertaking soon to be underway with a full refurbishment and new-build extension, the key challenge on the project was to ensure that there was minimal disruption to the day to day operations of the business, ensuring Stringers Department Store to keep its doors open to its customers throughout the works.

John worked closely with the architects, Creative SPARC, to support their design process and resolve any technical intricacies for the roof and new build extension. To ensure that the roof replacement ran as smoothly as possible, a complete temporary roof structure was erected to provide complete coverage to the visiting shoppers underneath, guaranteeing a complete weatherproofing solution in the harshest winter months, whilst the roofing works were underway.

John oversaw the project installation, carried out by Garland approved contractor, K Pendleburys, with weekly site visits. The works were phased, first to completely lift and remove the original roof, before installing the StressPly Signature system. Once installed, the new-build extension was built, with a StressPly Signature roof to finish.

The prominent town centre project was completed on time and on budget as a result of the high level of service provided by Garland UK. With works completed well before the busy Christmas period, Stringer’s Department Store was able to operate business as usual and were delighted with the end result and new additional workspace for their office team.

Once completed the owners were supplied with a market-leading Garland Single-Point Guarantee, offering 30 years of unrivalled protection and confidently assuring peace of mind that the future of Stringer’s Department Store is in a safe pair of hands.
